Genuine H152 HZJ79 Series 5 Speed Gearbox
From factory, the HZJ79 is fitted with the R151F gearbox. These gearboxes are the same gearbox that is fitted to a 4 cylinder N70 Toyota Hilux with a 1KD-FTV, even going back as far as 1992 model Toyota Surfs. So – if that doesn’t tell you enough about it’s lack luster strength, I’m not sure what else will.
WHY DID TOYOTA DO THIS?
Well, while they do make utility specified vehicles, they also tried to ‘lighten up’ the driveline whether it to be for the cost factor or some other reason. The R series gearbox in their eyes may have shifted smoother, and operated with less gear noise, or maybe they just didn’t know what a beast of the engine they had made with the 1HZ… Who really knows. Either way – it’s a shit gearbox for the application, and it can’t be upgraded internally enough to support the realistic use of the vehicle as a tow rig, ute, or even when turbocharged.
SO HOW ARE WE GOING TO FIX THIS!?
Here’s the not so fun part. Short answer is, we can’t really help you a whole lot, yet. You need to essentially find yourself a H151 from a HDJ79 (14 spline) or HZJ80 (21 spline – DX Models Only due to the part time transfer case). If you use the HDJ79 gearbox, we will need to supply you with a HDJ79 clutch kit as well (in the drop down menu). If you find an 80 Series gearbox, you can use your existing clutch. This is because of the spline count on the input shaft. It also doesn’t matter which one you pick for strength, whether it be 21 spline or 14 spline, you are not going to break it because of this.
