It’s one of the most common questions we get from HDJ100 owners: “I want to tune my 1HD-FTE, but will my auto transmission handle it?”
The short answer? Yes, and we’ve got a very specific, proven number for you. As measured at the wheels on our Mainline Dyno, 270HP is the sweet spot for the A750, and here’s why.
First, a quick word on the A750
The A750F is the 5-speed automatic Toyota fitted to the HDJ100 Series Landcruiser. It’s a solid unit, well-engineered, and when looked after properly, perfectly capable of handling a performance build.
But like anything, there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about it. When you start pushing more power and torque through any automatic, the first thing that becomes a weak point is the valve body. This is the hydraulic control centre of the gearbox; it manages line pressure, shift timing, and how the transmission reacts under load. The 1HD-FTE produces a heap more power and torque when tuned, and you’re asking the transmission to do a job it wasn’t exactly configured for.
Think of it like upgrading the clutch when Dyno-tuning a manual vehicle. The valve body upgrade on the A750 is exactly that – the automatic equivalent of a clutch upgrade.
The Ratiotek valve body kit – what it does
The Ratiotek A750 Valve Body Upgrade Kit recalibrates the transmission to cope with increased torque output. It firms up shift quality, improves line pressure, and makes the whole gearbox more responsive and resilient with performance upgrades fitted.
It’s a must-do if you’re increasing the power by adding a Unichip or Turbo and Fuel System upgrades to your HDJ100 auto. There’s no point building a 1HD-FTE with a heap more torque than factory, and leaving the gearbox a weak point.
So, how much power can the A750 handle?
With the Ratiotek valve body kit fitted, 270HP is the comfortable, reliable limit we recommend for the A750 in the HDJ100. We’ve built plenty of these 270HP packages, and they make make for an absolutely weapon of a Landcruiser. They’re smooth to drive, make responsive power, and are reliable for long trips. It’s not a number we’ve pulled out of thin air, it’s what we’ve settled on after real-world builds through our Brisbane workshop.
How we hit 270HP: the injectors matter
To reach 270HP on the 5 Speed Auto HDJ100, we build a set of A750-specific 270HP High Flow Injectors that are closer to a +17. These are purpose-built for this application, sized to deliver exactly the fuel flow needed to hit that target reliably without being too harsh on the Auto.
Why not go bigger? The +30 injector problem
This comes up a lot, and it’s worth addressing properly. We do not recommend +30 injectors in the A750 automatic.
Heads up
The +30 injectors work fine in the old 4-speed auto. But in the 5-speed A750, the more aggressive fuel delivery puts additional stress on the transmission it simply wasn’t designed to absorb. The engine can handle big numbers on a dyno, but you’re sacrificing gearbox longevity.
The +17 injectors hit 270HP cleanly, and keep the A750 happy. That’s why they’re what we spec into every one of our builds.
The complete solution — HDJ100 270HP auto performance package
If you want the whole lot sorted in one go, we’ve put together a complete package purpose-built for your A750 equipped HDJ100.

If I wanted to go further, can I build my A750 to handle beyond 270HP?
In our experience no, the Landcruiser A750 cannot be modified to reliably handle power beyond this level. Yes a Transmission shop may be able to ‘build’ you a box with upgraded components, but this does not overcome it’s overall design and they don’t last at higher power levels.
