Why go brand new?
- After years of working on these engines and fuel systems, we have found a clear difference in the performance and quality of a reconditioned pump as opposed to a brand new one. We personally have opted to stick to brand new only due to the issues we see with rebuilt units. We have found the rebuilt units may pass fuel room testing, but may not be suffice when looking for performance upgrades.
The injector pump on your 1HD-FTE may be on the way out and need to be replaced if you have the following symptoms:
- Poor fuel economy
- Excessive smoke
- Rev hanging
- Surging
- Cutting out under heavy load
- Hard starting
- Down on power
- Knocking/Noisy pump
Other common signs of failure include,
- EDU Circuit Fault P1215 – When the engine shuts off around 2800RPM-3000RPM (depending on load), this is an indication that your injection pump has failed.
- Timing Control Valve Fault P1220 – It is common for the timing control valve to fail, this will cause an engine light and the engine to have varying amounts of power, and have a louder than usual engine noise from too much timing advance, or none at all if is on the retarded side of timing.
- Low power – The 1HD-FTE suffers from low power if the injection pump is about to fail. It is an early sign of the above P1215 EDU Circuit Fault code, without actually turning the engine off or throwing an engine light.
Exchange?
- This is a brand new item for outright purchase, NO EXCHANGE REQUIRED. We do not recommend throwing your old pump out, we recommend giving it to a local fuel injection shop for rebuilding. Unfortunately, if everyone just throws their old ones out it may mean one day if brand new ones are no longer available, there will be less in circulation for rebuilding purposes.
