We tuned Shauno’s DIRTY30!

If you own a 4×4, then this vehicle needs no explanation. After on-going issues with an existing tune, we were trusted to bring Shauno’s pride and joy Dirty30 build up to a reliable, powerful and functioning state before it’s much anticipated USA trip for 4WD 24/7.

Vehicle Specs:

  • 1HD-FTE Engine from a HDJ79
  • UFI 18G Turbo
  • Standard Injectors
  • A750F 5 Speed Auto from a 100 Series Toyota Landcruiser
  • FFM Fabrications Custom Airbox & Top Mount Intercooler
  • 3″ Exhaust
  • Unichip with 5 Map Select and Electronic Boost Control

Before it even hit our workshop floor, we had heard that this particular vehicle had boost control issues for a number of years. Other workshops had tried to get the UFI 18G turbo spooling, but unfortunately all were unsuccessful. This concerned us, considering we have fitted and sold 100’s of these turbochargers, this had not ever been an issue. This lead us back down the path of perhaps a tuning fault or other part fault. First thing we looked at was the boost control duty cycle inside the UniChip tuning software, and found it was set to 100%! This was not a great start. Typically, with a 18psi wastegate, the most you’ll ever need is 60-75% to achieve 35psi of boost. Someone had obviously been struggling here. Second thing we looked at was the boost controller itself. Sure enough, it was faulty. Poor Shaun’s been battling boost issues with this vehicle for years, trusting other tuning shops to identify and be able to rectify this. A simple test to pulse the controller from inside the UniChip software allowed us to determine that the controller was not operating. Luckily we carried replacement MAC valve boost controllers in stock, so we replaced that, reduced the duty cycle back down to a reasonable level and there we go. Boost is back on the table!

Now we could finally get to tuning it. The goal was simple, maximise power without reducing reliability. And we did just that! We carried out a Power tune, Daily driver tune, Eco tune, 4×4 Tune, and a bog-stock Tune on Map 5. Giving this well known vehicle 5 tunes to select on the fly for any obstacle.

Final results:

212HP/711NM on the Power Tune! Through the A750F 100 Series 5 Speed Auto and 35″ tyres.

Hi I have a hz79 dual cab which was a 1hz engine then I had put a 1hdft motor had issues with fuel pump which was worn ,now I’m looking to go either way 1hdfte or a 1hdftM take the max out of it on stock internals , ready to do external works around it if you could help me in the right direction

    1. Hi mate! If you already have a 1HD-FT in your HZJ79, then that’s a good base to start off with. We can do one of our high flow performance pumps on this, with our high flow injectors. Paired with a UFI 21L or GTurbo Titanium, you’ll happily see 300HP out of this setup and 850nm of torque at the wheels. We have emailed you to discuss this further but look forward to being able to assist you with a performance upgrade on your Landcruiser!
