📈 We proved it,

In back-to-back testing, the PDI front mount kit dropped inlet temps from 260°C to 70°C at 100km/h uphill with 40+ psi. Outperforming top mount setups by a wide margin. Here’s some results compared to the best aftermarket top mounts on the market (when tested on a VDJ79 Toyota Landcruiser V8):

  • Factory Top Mounted Intercooler: 88°C

  • Upgraded Top Mount Intercooler: 75°C

  • PDI Front Mount Intercooler: 47°C under identical condition – even dropped EGTs by 50°C at 110 km/h – proven protection and power.

  • That makes the PDI Coolers front mount 3 times more effective than the aftermarket upgrade.

  • During testing we have seen this maintain intake temps to 4-7degC above ambient temperature for normal around town driving.

❓ Cross Over Delete Option 

  • For the 1HD-FTE, PDI Intercoolers give the option of leaving the crossover in place (with the EGR valve) or a cast alloy adapter onto the inlet manifold for all of the Toyota Landcruiser models (80/75/79/100/105).
  • The 1HD-FTE in our HDJ79 ute has the crossover in place and has 311rwkw and 1000nm (at the wheels).
  • I’m sure there is a point where air flow is better without the crossover but I don’t believe we are there yet.
  • This is mostly done for aesthetics.

⚙️ Leaving the crossover in place is good for,

  • Legally it has to be there since the EGR valve is in the crossover – you can still stop EGR gas flow with the valve in place.
  • No more power is made by removing the crossover (for most people)
  • Smooth shutdown is possible with the crossover and butterfly in place.
  • If the engine ever runs on its own fumes (and I’ve seen two 1HD-FTEs do that) then turning off the key turns off the engine.
  • If it’s the late model with electronic butterfly then it must remain plugged in to the harness.
  • If you need to pass a pit inspection the crossover must be fitted.

🚗 Auto Trans? No problem.

  • The transmission coolers available to fit with our kits are the best we could find and we give the option of two versions for the Toyota Landcruiser 100 Series.
  • The standard one is the same as is used in the Toyota Landcruiser 80 Series kits and we get reports that transmission temps have dropped after fitting our 100 Series Front Mount Intercooler and trans cooler.
  • As well as the trans cooler being very good we also expect the transmission can hold the gear for longer and stay in lock-up, which reduces heat being made.
  • From the pictures you can see we have chosen to have them in front of the 100 Series Front Mount Intercooler.
  • The auto cooler bracket has six options with three different positions for either of the two transmission coolers.
  • We recommend having them in the lower position to prevent heat transfer into the intercooler but if other items such as winches are fitted it would be good idea to have the transmission cooler lifted up for better cooling.

💡Will large spotlights affect the results?

This is a common question, and important question.

  • We have many owners who regard these as the best unit they have fitted with their ability to provide cool inlet air. That is after trying top mounts and smaller front mounts.

  • When tuning on the dyno we don’t have a large cooling fan in front so this simulates zero speed, high load situations with the only air being pulled through by the main engine fan.

  • For most the alternative is an electric thermo fan attached to a top mounted intercooler. They are working to overcome the heat rising from the engine and from the cores close proximity to the hot engine. The insulation in a electric motor is rated to a certain temperature and the best quality units will switch off when they get to 130degC to protect themselves. Instead of assuming them to be at their best when you need them the most, on a hot day under high load, you need to expect to have zero intercooler efficiency.

  • Front mount exposure compared to the opening in a bonnet scoop is significantly different. The placement is important as airflow over the bonnet into a scoop can be disrupted by bull bars and lights. Also some engine bays are positively pressured due to air hitting the front diff and other components – this means, just like your radiator, the best place to get cool air is at the front of the car.
