PDI 105 Series Front Mount Intercooler Kit suitable for Toyota Landcruiser HZJ105 HDJ105
PDI 105 Series Front Mount Intercooler Kit, suitable for the HZJ105 1HZ, or a 105 Series with a 1HD-FTE conversion
🚗 Vehicle suitability,
- Toyota Landcruiser HZJ105 1HZ 4.2L Diesel Engine
- Toyota Landcruiser 105 Series with a 1HD-FTE conversion
- Manual & Auto transmission – Choose your engine, transmission, turbo and airbox options in the drop downs
The PDI Intercooler kit for the 105 Series Toyota Landcruiser is built for the 1HZ in the HZJ105, and for 105 Series owners running a 1HD-FTE conversion. Whether you’re towing, touring or building more power, a front mount keeps your intake temps down when it matters most.
🔥 Why Front Mount?🧊
- 1HD-FTE conversion options run the large 675mm x 300mm x 76mm core – over 5.8 x greater surface area than the factory 1HD-FTE core, thicker and better placed for increased cooling.
- 1HZ (HZJ105) options use the smaller 645mm x 240mm x 65mm core to reduce the heat loading on the radiator. Most 1HZ aren’t pushed too hard, and this core will easily cater for almost all turbo 1HZ builds.
- 2.5″ Stainless steel pipework with heavy duty silicone joiners.
- High torque stainless steel clamps.
- Moulded end tanks with rear facing outlets allow a bigger core, pushed back as far as possible to increase the draw through from the engine cooling fan.
- Optional PDI Heavy Duty Trans Cooler for automatic 1HD-FTE conversions.
🧩 Fitment,
- Fits with all bull-bar and winch designs as the core sits back close to the condenser.
- The 1HZ core is designed to fit around the condenser pipe.
- To fit the large core in a 105, the hose and piping from the condenser to the compressor needs to be replaced with the recessed HDJ100-style pipe, or purchase a one piece replacement from us (see 105 Series 1HD-FTE Conversion below).
- NO SILICONE in front of the front panel – with the outlets being rear facing, the stainless steel pipes connect to the intercooler with straight silicone.
- If you have or want to maintain a power steering cooler pipe out front, this needs to be routed through the opening for the passenger side headlight.
- Air can be felt strongly pulling through the intercooler 50-80mm in front of the core while idling on startup. To keep air being pulled through while engine temps are low (and the fan hub normally free wheels) some extra fluid can be added to the viscous coupling.
📦 What’s in the Kit,
- PDI front mount intercooler – large 675 x 300 x 76 core (1HD-FTE conversion) or 645 x 240 x 65 core (1HZ)
- Polished stainless 2.5″ pipework
- Heavy duty silicone joiners
- High torque stainless steel clamps
- Cast alloy inlet manifold adapter (if selecting the 1HD-FTE crossover delete option)
- PDI Heavy Duty Trans Cooler and bracket (if selected)
📈 We proved it,
- During testing we have seen this maintain intake temps to 4-7°C above ambient for normal around town driving.
- Under load (on the highway towing a heavy trailer) running a steady 15-18psi with 150°C, the intake temps sat 15°C above ambient.
- On a 20°C day the intake temps got up to 35°C – you’ll have to trust us, but that’s really impressive.
❓ Cross Over Delete Option
- A crossover delete option is available (extra $150) for the 1HD-FTE conversion. Select “1HD-FTE conversion – crossover delete” in the Engine option.
- The 1HZ kit is a crossover delete design as standard, at no extra fee.
- For the 1HD-FTE, PDI Intercoolers give the option of leaving the crossover in place (with the EGR valve) or a cast alloy adapter onto the inlet manifold for all of the Toyota Landcruiser models (80/75/79/100/105).
- The 1HD-FTE in our HDJ79 ute has the crossover in place and has 311rwkw and 1000nm (at the wheels).
- I’m sure there is a point where air flow is better without the crossover but I don’t believe we are there yet.
⚙️ Leaving the crossover in place is good for,
- Legally it has to be there since the EGR valve is in the crossover – you can still stop EGR gas flow with the valve in place.
- No more power is made by removing the crossover (for most people)
- Smooth shutdown is possible with the crossover and butterfly in place.
- If the engine ever runs on its own fumes (and I’ve seen two 1HD-FTEs do that) then turning off the key turns off the engine.
- If it’s the late model with electronic butterfly then it must remain plugged in to the harness.
- If you need to pass a pit inspection the crossover must be fitted.
- For 2002+ onwards models, the smooth shut off valve cannot be physically removed from the electrical harness as it will go into limp mode. It must be relocated, usually by way of extending the wiring into the passenger side inner guard so it is hidden out of sight.
🚗 Auto Trans? No problem.
- The transmission coolers available to fit with our kits are the best we could find and we give the option of two versions for the 105 Series. Select your setup under the Transmission option.
- The standard one is the same as is used in the Toyota Landcruiser 80 Series kits and we get reports that transmission temps have dropped after fitting our 105 Series Front Mount Intercooler and trans cooler.
- As well as the trans cooler being very good we also expect the transmission can hold the gear for longer and stay in lock-up, which reduces heat being made.
- From the pictures you can see we have chosen to have them in front of the 105 Series Front Mount Intercooler.
- The auto cooler bracket has six options with three different positions for either of the two transmission coolers.
- We recommend having them in the lower position to prevent heat transfer into the intercooler but if other items such as winches are fitted it would be good idea to have the transmission cooler lifted up for better cooling.
💡Will large spotlights affect the results?
This is a common question, and important question.
- We have many owners who regard these as the best unit they have fitted with their ability to provide cool inlet air. That is after trying top mounts and smaller front mounts.
- When tuning on the dyno we don’t have a large cooling fan in front so this simulates zero speed, high load situations with the only air being pulled through by the main engine fan.
- For most the alternative is an electric thermo fan attached to a top mounted intercooler. They are working to overcome the heat rising from the engine and from the cores close proximity to the hot engine. The insulation in a electric motor is rated to a certain temperature and the best quality units will switch off when they get to 130degC to protect themselves. Instead of assuming them to be at their best when you need them the most, on a hot day under high load, you need to expect to have zero intercooler efficiency.
- Front mount exposure compared to the opening in a bonnet scoop is significantly different. The placement is important as airflow over the bonnet into a scoop can be disrupted by bull bars and lights. Also some engine bays are positively pressured due to air hitting the front diff and other components – this means, just like your radiator, the best place to get cool air is at the front of the car.
🔧 105 Series 1HD-FTE Conversion,
- When converting a 105 Series to 1HD-FTE, a modified aircon line is required to fit the large MK2 intercooler core.
- The hose can be found here.
💡 This Intercooler works great with the HD Auto 100/105 Series airbox
If you have a Toyota Landcruiser 100 Series, you can find that front mount here.

Awesome service as always, not the first time ive ordered and wont be the last
Legends to deal with, shipping is always super quick. Good genuine Aussie business 👌🏼🤙🏼
Great guys to deal with the intercooler I ordered was delivered on time, there was a few slight hiccups but with a little bit of backwards and forwards we came to a solution benefiting both parties, so definitely 100% with the products the sell and supply will definitely be in contact with them again when I need further parts for my build
