Toyota’s 1H Series manual transmissions are known for their strength, but there are some differences between each version. Changes to gear ratios, synchro design, and case strength can significantly affect how a Toyota LandCruiser drives, whether that’s crawling off-road, towing, or cruising on the highway.
The table below compares the most common H15x and R15x gearboxes used across 70, 80, 100 and 105 Series Toyota LandCruisers, where ratios and designs differ between models and generations.
To make these differences easier to understand, we’ve built a Gearbox Ratio Calculator that shows exactly how each gearbox performs once tyre size and diff ratios are taken into account.

Automatic Transmission Comparison
For those considering swapping their automatic transmission to manual, here is your existing ratios in your relevant to model transmission.

Gear Ratio Calculator
We’ve developed a gearbox ratio calculator so you can compare what your current RPM at 100 is vs what it would be with a new H152 or H153 in 5th gear.
Just select the following from the drop downs:
Tyre size: Current or what you plan on running, help plan your future builds ;)
Diff Ratio: Current or if you plan on throwing some reduction gears into your build!
Gearbox: Select your current gearbox or pick the future box and see what real world RPM difference you’ll get
Gearbox RPM Calculator
Calculated using formula: (km/h × Gear × Diff × 530.61) / Tyre Size
Disclaimer: This calculator is provided for informational purposes only. Results are theoretical estimates based on standard mathematical formulas and do not account for tyre wear, inflation pressures, load, or mechanical discrepancies. HD Automotive is not liable for decisions made based on these calculations. Always verify mechanical compatibility before purchasing parts.
Upgrade and replacement options:
70 Series
LandCruiser VDJ76, VDJ78, VDJ79
Straight bolt in for the earlier model VDJ70’s that didn’t get the updated ratios or if your late model’s gearbox is getting tired.

LandCruiser HDJ79
The HDJ79 models are fitted with the center shift H151 gearbox . Our H152 conversion transmission is a straight swap.

LandCruiser HZJ79
The HZJ79 comes factory-fitted with the R151 transmission, the smaller weaker transmission. These have much the same story as the HZJ105 DX, a converted H152 (or H151 center shift) will bolt in, but of course you will have to source all the accessories from a damaged H151 as the R-Series transfer case, bell housing, etc. will not swap over onto the new H box.
We now offer the bell housings for sale:

The gearbox with the correct input shaft is here.
Note: You will still need all the parts from a H151 to make it work

LandCruiser HZJ70, HZJ73, HZJ75
Most HZJ75 are fitted with the older H55F Transmission. We don’t have a direct bolt-in upgrade for this transmission but we sell brand new genuine transmissions!

80 Series
All manual 80 series models, regardless of being a GXL or a base model (DX), have a center shifter H150 or H151 transmission already. Bolting in our H152 to these vehicles is a straight swap – Just select the correct input shaft for your application:
