UFI TD42 turbo upgrade for the Nissan Patrol GQ and GU
HD Automotive is Australia’s largest authorised UFI distributor. This turbo bolts straight onto the factory T3 style flange of the TD42T and TD42Ti, with or without an intercooler.
A stock TD42T makes around 130hp at the wheels on our Mainline dyno. Our 250hp+ package, built around this turbo, makes around 250hp at the wheels.
Which size do I need?
Pick your power goal first. The turbo follows from that.

All four are built on a Mitsubishi TD05 and set up by United Fuel Injection for low-down torque, so the bigger sizes still drive well around town.
Which manifold option?
Choose the manifold you’re running when you order.
- Factory manifold or Radius manifolds: supplied with a Radius Fabrications 3-inch dump pipe with an EGT bung.
- Any other brand: supplied with a dump flange so a pipe can be made to suit.
Don’t run the 21L or 23L on a log style manifold. It kills the response of a bigger turbo. Pair them with a high mount merge manifold like the Tillix high mount split pulse merge manifold.

There’s no gasket between the rear housing and the dump pipe. Both faces are machined flat. A thin layer of RTV on the dump flange is all it needs.
What else will I need?
- Fuel. A bigger turbo with no extra fuel makes boost, not much power. The UFI 11mm pump suits the 16G and 18G. The UFI 12mm pump suits the 21L and 23L.
- Intercooler. Recommended past a mild 16G setup. PDI kits suit the GQ, the GU Series 1 to 3 and the GU Series 4.
- Clutch. The factory clutch won’t hold the extra torque. See the UFI 850Nm clutch kit.

FAQ
Does it suit my GQ?
Yes, on a turbocharged TD42. For a non-turbo GQ, start with the non-turbo conversion kit.
Do I need a tune?
The TD42 pump is mechanical, so there’s no ECU tune. Setting the pump up on a dyno is strongly recommended.
18G or 21L?
If you might want 250hp down the track, buy the 21L now. Swapping turbos twice costs more than doing it once.
